This is a type of surface irrigation. All the field must be level or well levelled, with embankments on the sides to prevent water draining off. The water into the field or basin flows unidirectional. The embankments must be maintained to avoid water wastage. Within the project sites, basin irrigation is practiced in places with moderate to slow intake soils and deep-rooted, closely spaced crops like Rice. Basin irrigation is an effective method of leaching salts from the soil profile into the deeper groundwater.
